Teens could lose licenses for having booze

What some teenagers consider a rite of passage could turn into an embarrassing punishment that puts them back on their bikes.

A legislative committee Wednesday was scheduled to consider a bill (LB258) that would make driver's license suspension a punishment for minors busted for being in possession of alcohol.

First-time violators would have their licenses taken away for not less than 60 days, and not more than six months. Second-time violators would be without licenses for a year. And those who broke the law three or more times would not be able to drive for two years or until they turned 21.

Sen. Steve Lathrop of Omaha, who introduced the bill, said Nebraska is one of 12 states that doesn't have a license suspension law for minors caught with alcohol.
